ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE
ABOUT CARMEL DANCE FESTIVAL'S SUMMER PROGRAM
CDF is thrilled to offer its 1st annual Summer Program. Each year will have a different theme; unique to the artists involved. Since we are a dance festival, we though it would be apropos to offer an immersion into 3 different contemporary dance companies for our first year; Seattle-based Whim W'Him, London-based Rambert, and Chicago-based PARA.MAR Dance Theatre. This program is designed to provide an extraordinary in-person experience in a safe, supportive, challenging, intimate, and productive environment that fosters lasting breakthroughs and life-long connections. Dancers will work closely with guest artists on progressive ballet, contemporary, partnering, improvisation, movement generation, repertory, and performance skills. It is an ideal opportunity for dancers to enhance technique and artistry while building community. Each week will culminate in a public, site-specific performance. @carmeldancefestival
ABOUT OUR RESIDENT COMPANY; BALLARE CARMEL
Ballare Carmel is the resident company of the Carmel Dance Festival. It was founded in 2021 by Artistic Director Lillian Barbeito
(a graduate of The Juilliard School, former Co-Artistic Director of BODYTRAFFIC, and founder of HAVEN Global Sanctuary for Dance) to tell Monterey County stories, myths, and bold feats, through contemporary dance. The project-based ensemble's repertoire by established and emerging choreographers includes works by Jennifer Archibald, Noelle Kayser, James Gregg, Ihsan Rustem, and Skye Schmidt. Lillian will direct the site-specific performances throughout the Summer Program. @ballarecarmel

ELIGIBILITY

16+ (dancers aged 16 & 17 must have a legal guardian sign a waiver)

Excellent technique in any dance genre of dance

VIDEO GUIDELINES
Please include the following in your dance video(s):

2 minutes of unedited improvisation/one take

2 + minutes of performance or rehearsal footage of choreographed material (any setting acceptable)

Please upload your Video Statement of Interest and Application Videos to Dropbox, Vimeo, or Youtube. Kindly provide links and include passwords if needed. Videos that need to be downloaded will NOT be considered. IMPORTANT: include your video link in both the Google form and your introduction email.

FINANCIAL AID
PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Thanks to a donation from a Carmel Dance Festival patron (who perfers to remain anonymus) partial scholarships are now available to dancers attending one, two, or three weeks of the program. Once accepted into the program, send the following materials to:

FULL SCHOLARSHIPS
Local and out of town participants age 16+ who attend all three weeks of the program are welcome to apply for FULL SCHOLARSHIPS. Priority will be given to students who apply on or before April 10th. Once accepted into the program, send the following materials to: Lillian @carmeldancefestival.org.

CARMEL SUNSET ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP
The Carmel Sunset Rotary, an organization committed to empowering youth in the arts, has generously awarded a $1000 grant to Carmel Dance Festival for a local dancer to participate in the 2023 Summer Program!
​
"We are pleased to sponsor a partial scholarship for a local young dancer to participate in such a great program offering transformational training, networking, and performance opportunities!" ~ Carmel Sunset Rotary
To be eligible, dancers must be between the ages of 16-17 during the program and reside full-time in Monterey County. To be considered for the $1,000 Carmel Sunset Rotary Scholarship, simply follow the application and scholarship application guidelines above plus email the following additional materials to Lillian@carmeldancefestival.org:

INTERNSHIPS
​
MEDIA INTERN ~ July 6-August 6
Congratulations to RU FERGUSON ('22 Graduate of Southern Methodist University) for being selected as Carmel Dance Festival's 2023 Meadia Intern! Ru will take daily photos and videos, photoshop 3 weekly social media posts with graphics, edit 1 highlight video per week, and create 1 recap video of the entire program that includes interviews with the participants and guest artists. Ru has some photoshop and video editing skills, and enjoys telling stories through photos and videos.

PRODUCTION INTERN ~ July 9-30
Congratulations to JESSICA BROWN (current dance major at George Mason University) for being selected as Carmel Dance Festival's 2023 Production Intern! Jessica will help with transportation, space management, set up and breakdown of performance sites, costumes, and other production related tasks.

HOUSING
LOCATION
We are working with local families to provide private and shared rooms with kitchen facilities. Prices range from $275-$700 per week. Carmel Dance Festival is helping facilitate safe & affordable housing options for our participants, however, rooms are limited and acting quickly to reserve housing is highly recommended. Images of accommodations and pricing will be avaialable at the end of April. Only participants who apply and are accepted to the program will have access to housing details.

SUMMER PROGRAM LOCATION
​
All technique classes, repertory sessions, and rehearsals will take place at Carmel High School's spacious dance studio; located at 3600 Ocean Ave, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923. The studio has two full wall mirrors (with curtains), sprung hardwood floors, air conditioning and heat, ample parking, and is accessible to persons with disabilities.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS
Karl Watson
Whim W'Him
Karl began dancing as a young child in Cleveland, OH. Through many wonderful teachers and the support of his family, he discovered his passion for sharing stories, emotions, and experiences through movement. Karl furthered his training at Butler University, where he graduated with a B.F.A. in Dance Performance cum laude and History Minor. He was fortunate to experience additional study with Houston Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Doug Varone & Dancers, Springboard Danse Montreal, and Countertechnique. Karl began his professional career after graduation dancing with Luna Negra Dance Theater, Visceral Dance Chicago, and now Whim W’Him. Throughout these experiences he has created and performed works by a wide range of contemporary dancemakers and artists. Karl has also performed with other project-based companies. In addition to performance, Karl is passionate about dance education and hopes to help students of any age discover and develop a love for dance, art, and community.
Joseph Kudra
Rambert
Joseph was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1991. He has worked internationally as a dancer with “River North Chicago Dance Company”, “DanceWorks Chicago”, “Luna Negra Dance Theatre” (Chicago), “Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet” (NY), “BODYTRAFFIC”(LA), “Ate9 Dance Company” (LA), “Aszure Barton & Artists”, and most recently with Eastman-Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Belgium) and “Opera Ballet Vlaanderen." Joseph has performed works by choreographers such as Aszure Barton, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Alexander Ekman, Andonis Foniadakias, Emanuel Gat, Johan Inger, Jiri Kylian, Crystal Pite, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Hofesh Shechter, Richard Siegel, and Jo Stromgren. Joseph has also worked as a choreographic assistant and stager for Cherkaoui. Joseph joined Kamea Dance Company as a soloist in 2021.

Lillian Barbeito
Summer Program Director
LILLIAN BARBEITO brings more than 35 years of dance experience as an artist, producer, director, and educator to her role as Artistic Director of Ballare Carmel. During the course of her career, she has been a performer with contemporary dance companies, the co-founder of a world-renowned non-profit organization, the founder of an innovative corporation, and an internationally recognized, certified teacher of Countertechnique.
Barbeito grew up in the desert under the blues skies of Santa Fe, New Mexico where she trained with the Santa Fe Dance Foundation and worked with The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Southwest Ballet, and the Santa Fe Opera. She earned her BFA from The Juilliard School where she studied on a 4 year, full-tuition scholarship awarded by Tomorrow’s Leaders of America for her essay about the world dancing together in harmony. Barbeito had an extensive performance career that took her to Europe, New York, and then finally to Los Angeles, where she founded BODYTRAFFIC with Tina Berkett. Under her co-direction, the ensemble received critical acclaim and toured to the most prestigious dance venues across the globe. She has choreographed over 50 works for high schools, universities, competitions, regional ballet companies, and professional modern dance companies throughout the US and Canada. During the pandemic, Barbeito launched HAVEN Global Sanctuary for Dance, a platform dedicated to shaping an equitable, diverse, and inclusive future of dance.
Barbeito is married to filmmaker and environmentalist Grant Barbeito. They relocated their two sons, Oliver who is 13, and Forest who is 8, two bearded dragons, and an Irish doodle named Harvey to Carmel Valley to launch the Carmel Dance Festival and Ballare Carmel.
