2) NOMINATION
At CDF we understand the importance of and deeply value teamwork. Therefore, to encourage teamwork, choreographers can not nominate themselves; they must be endorsed by someone else. Choreographers should not submit their materials themselves. Nominators should USE SUBJECT LINE: "2025 CHOREOGRAPHY FELLOW NOMINATION" and send the following materials to Lillian@carmeldancefestival.org:
-
Nomination Letter ~ Parameters for the letter are wide open, however, you may consider including the following:
-
How do you know the choreography fellowship candidate?
-
What's unique about them?
-
Why they are deserving of an award?
-
How would they benefit from the fellowship?
-
What could they do with the experience gained during the fellowship in the future?
-
-
Candidate's Resume (must include candidate's email and phone number)
-
Link(s) to Videos of Candidate's Choreography (see below for details)
-
1 additional letter of recommendation

WORK SAMPLE GUIDELINES
-
Works Sample ONE ~ performance footage of a complete 5+ minute piece with little or no editing (wide shot). When we refer to a "complete piece," we mean an entire work from its beginning to its end, regardless of its duration.
-
Work Sample TWO ~ 3 + minutes of performance or rehearsal footage from an additional piece (any setting acceptable). This should not be a reel, but a piece or section of a work with little to no editing. For choreographers who have created longer works (over 15 minutes), it's advisable for Work Sample Two to be an excerpt ranging from 3 to 10 minutes that showcases candidates choreographic prowess and/or promise.
-
Please provide links (and include passwords if needed) to the candidate's work samples that have been uploaded to Dropbox, Vimeo, or Youtube. Videos that need to be downloaded will NOT be considered.

NOMINATION DEADLINE: Sunday, September 28th at 5:00 pm Pacific
Nominations will be accepted and reviewed from Monday, September 1st through Sunday, September 28th at 5:00 pm Pacific Time. Three choreographers will be selected based on what candidates have done, the work proposed, and how they will apply what fellowship supports to future choreographic endeavors.

FINALISTS
Following nomination, nine choreographers will be selected by a diverse panel to move forward into the proposal round. This phase is designed to give each artist the opportunity to articulate their creative vision across multiple formats and demonstrate versatility, imagination, and intentionality.

Finalists Will Be Asked to Submit:

Select from a CDF~curated library of music and create a short movement phrase in response.
Purpose: To observe musicality, phrasing, and your choreographic approach to pre~existing sound.
2. COSTUME~INFORMED CONCEPT
Respond to a provided costume moodboard and write a brief concept for a piece that incorporates or is inspired by the visual aesthetic. Purpose: To explore visual storytelling and the connection between design and movement.
3. OPEN CONCEPT PROPOSAL
Pitch a project of your own design. Include:
-
Number of dancers
-
Movement vocabulary
-
Music/sound design
-
Costumes, lighting, set, and/or props
-
Additional elements (e.g., text, projection, audience interaction, site specificity)
-
General structure or arc of the work
Purpose: To understand your artistic voice, scale of ambition, and clarity of vision.
Finalists will also complete a short questionnaire, including:
-
A synopsis of their proposed work
-
What you hope to give and gain through the Fellowship
-
What you hope the audience experiences
-
Any special artistic or production needs
Finalist proposals will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel, with an emphasis on originality, communicative power, and alignment with the spirit of the Carmel Dance Festival.

"I have never been in a space where I felt deeply supported and could truly play, dream, and collaborate. This experience was so wonderful and exciting as a choreographer. Building a relationship with Lillian and Carmel Dance Festival was so special." ~ Gianna Burright, 2023 Choreography Fellow
ROOM & BOARD
Please note that the fellowship does not include financial aid for travel or Room & Board. Dance Fellows are responsible for transportation to Hidden Valley Music Seminars, accommodations, and 3 meals per day. Further details regarding Room & Board are provided on the Fellowship landing page.
EXCITING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Only 3 Choreographers Are Selected—The Pool Is Highly Competitive
If you're nominated but not selected as a Choreography Fellow we encourage you to be nominated in future seasons. Additionally, an internship may still offer a meaningful way to participate in the program and immerse yourself in the creative process.
Our Fellowship Internships provide a unique behind-the-scenes experience, allowing you to collaborate closely with producers and choreographers while gaining valuable insights and relationships that can shape your artistic path. These positions are designed to offer emerging artists:
-
Real~world experience in a professional setting
-
A chance to observe the creation and production of new work
-
Opportunity to strengthen resume and portfolio
Tracks:
-
Media (documentation, editing, social content)
-
Production (crew support, backstage management)
-
Costume (styling, wardrobe, fittings support)
Please note: Internships do not include housing, meals, or transportation. Still, many interns find the experience deeply rewarding—and a valuable stepping stone in their artistic journey. To inquire or express interest, email Lillian@carmeldancefestival.org.
TESTIMONALS
JUSTIN RAPPAPORT
How would you describe the sense of community among the fellows and faculty?
"...warm and honest, easy and authentic, it starts with Lillian and Alex and their great relationship as artists and friends and it trickles down from there seamlessly."

BRANNDI NICOLE LEWIS
How was this experience different than other fellowships/residencies that you have participated in?
"This experience felt more collaborative in the sense that the mentors really help bring your vision to life. It felt more hands-on, directive and uplifting."

How did the Fellowship impact you?
"This fellowship really allowed me to hone in on my creative voice and has made a lasting impact on me. It made me believe that I should continue to pursue a choreographic career. I’m very thankful!"

"This fellowship helped me to be confident in my ideas and my work. Prior, I always tended to second-guess what I was doing and lacked the confidence to believe that my work contributed meaningfully to the dance landscape. This fellowship built my confidence in myself and which will in effect enhance my choreographic process and the material that I produce. This fellowship also helped me to understand how to use all of my resources to acquire the things I need in regards to props and costumes. I also have a wider range when it comes to Musicality and paring my choreographic vocabulary with music that will allow it to stand out rather than overpowering it. There’s so much more but these few reasons are the largest standouts for me in regards to the growth that CDF encouraged in me."

"This program will heavily influence my future projects. Whatever comes next or whenever I get a company commission (let us pray haha) I will reset this work and expound it. It truly was the one one that I feel proud of and confident in. This program produced my future project."

NATASHA ADORLEE
What drew you to be nominated for this particular Fellowship Program?
"I had heard about some really interesting development happening spearheaded by Lillian, someone I admire greatly in this field, and I was drawn to getting to be in a collective community for a week to create. Sounded like a perfect combination of getting the opportunity to grow, manifest, and meet new people."

How was this experience different than other workshops/intensives/fellowships/residencies that you have participated in?
"I truly felt held in this community and in one week, felt relationships grow so rapidly and intimately. I've been to many workshops and intensives and have never felt the general vibe of all participants be this positive and focused on growth, not just as individuals, but as a whole."

GIANNA BURRIGHT
How was this experience different than other workshops/intensives/fellowships/residencies that you have participated in?
"This experience was different because we were able to fully dream with our works... We were so supported with costumes, sets and props. I have never been in a space where I feel like I can truly play, dream and collaborate in that way which made this experience so wonderful and exciting as a choreographer. Building that relationship with Lillian was so special to this experience."
